During Physics tuition sessions, many of our physics tutors will causally introduce the subject physics as the original of all the sciences. This is true to a certain extent as very long ago before the evolution of the branches of sciences such as biology and chemistry, most form of scientific study was through physical quantities and how they were and can be related. Today physics has grown so much to include electricity, magnetism, forces and energy. Each of this chapter is intensive and requires a lot of guidance for the student to achieve mastery. Physics is not just about writing formulae after formulae on the board or papers. Physics tutors need to develop a learning environment for students to explore the scientific concepts in their daily lives. Such pedagogical approach will help our students have a holistic understanding of physics as opposed to just memorising the formulae.
In the teaching of physics, many of our tutors have moved away from the usual worksheet practice of attempting multiple choice questions and structured question to using AFL tools. AFL means, assessment for learning, and this is the trending technique which is being employed by many educators around the world and also in Singapore to engage our students.
Assessment for learning makes use of several tools such as think pair share, entry pass systems, chain notes and snowballing techniques. Let’s explore each of this technique and see how it is relevant to the study of physics during physics tuition.
1) Think Pair Share – Students in a group setting during physics tuition are able to do this. The tutor will provide the students a question or an issue to think about. Then the students are required to think about the question first then share it with their partner to check if their approach to solving the issue is similar. If the approach is different, they can discuss among themselves why it is different and then approach the teacher to clarify their doubts.
2) Entry pass systems – The physics tutor is able to use the entry pass system during physics tuition to get the students to pen down their learning from the previous lesson. This serves to let the physics tutor if the students is able to follow the content and able to reproduce the previous learnings.
3) Chain Notes – This is a fun game to build upon each other knowledge. Again this activity can only be conducted in a group setting. Thus during group physics tuition is tool is more suitable to be used. I chain note, the first student will write a keyword in the topic, the next person will then build upon the keyword or link to the next keyword and then the chain note will be passed on.
4) Snowballing - Like the name suggests, snowballing is building up of knowledge from peer then across peers and to pitch it against the teacher. To perform a snowballing session amongst the students, at least a group of 4 students are required and this tool is extremely powerful if used well as the weaker students get to level up almost instantly by pitching their ideas against their peers and then their physics tutor during physics tuition.
Physics tuition has become a necessity among many students as in various fields right now, physics has become a core component. With physics tuition, it opens up a fantastic pathway to greater education opportunities in the tertiary institutes. Due to this growing demand for physics tuition in Singapore many parents have approached House Tutor for Physics tutors for both secondary and JC level.
